Some other news came on Saturday as well regarding a different Scott Boras client. The World Champion Royals agreed to a five-year deal worth $70 million with starter Ian Kennedy. The deal includes an opt-out clause for Kennedy after two years.
Kennedy adds a reliable presence in the Royals’ rotation. He’ll be joined by Edinson Volquez, Yordano Ventura, Chris Young, and a fifth starter that could be Danny Duffy, Kris Medlen, or Dillon Ger.
The Royals have had a pretty good offseason thus far–resigning Alex Gordon and Chris Young as well as signing Joakim Soria to their bullpen. They lost Johnny Cueto to the Giants, reliever Ryan Madson to the Athletics, and Ben Zobrist to the Cubs. They’ll fill out their outfield this year with Lorenzo Cain, Alex Gordon, and Jarrod Dyson. Omar Infante figures to return to his usual second baseman spot.
What do you think? Is the homer-prone Ian Kennedy a good fit for the reigning champions?
