If there is one race this year that is wide-open, it’s this one. There are a plethora of pitchers have a beef to be in the Cy Young race this year in the American League. With so many contenders, I felt it’s best to group them and identify the statistics where they are top-5 in the AL which would back their case.

The VETERANS:

Corey Kluber:

  • 5th in ERA – 3.09
  • T-3rd in Wins – 15
  • 3rd in K’s – 189
  • T-4th in WHIP – 1.05
  • 3rd in IP – 183.2
  • 3rd in BAA – .218
  • 2nd in AL Pitchers’ fWAR – 4.6
  • 2nd in AL Pithcers’ bWAR – 5.5
  • 5th in K/9 rate – 9.26
  • 10 consecutive quality starts

Chris Sale:

  • T-3rd in Wins – 15
  • 5th in K’s – 185
  • 2nd in WHIP – 1.02
  • 4th in BAA – .219
  • 2nd in IP – 185.2
  • 1st in CG – 5
  • 1st in AL Pitchers’ fWAR – 4.7
  • 4th in AL Pitchers’ bWAR – 4.9

Justin Verlander:

  • T-4th in Wins – 14
  • 2nd in K’s – 198
  • 1st in WHIP – 0.99
  • 2nd in BAA – .206
  • 1st in IP – 188.0
  • 3rd in K/9 rate – 9.48
  • 5th in AL Pitchers’ fWAR – 4.0
  • T-5th in AL Pitchers’ bWAR – 4.6
  • 10 consecutive quality starts
  • Excluding 3 blow up starts where he gave up 7+ runs, Verlander would have an AL-best 2.44 ERA

Cole Hamels:

  • 3rd in ERA – 2.91
  • T-4th in Wins – 14
  • 1st in AL Pitchers’ bWAR – 5.6

The NEWCOMERS:

Danny Duffy:

  • 4th in ERA – 3.01
  • T-4th in WHIP – 1.05
  • 5th in BAA – .227
  • 4th in K/9 rate – 9.33

Jose Quintana:

  • 1st in ERA – 2.77
  • 4th in AL Pitchers’ fWAR – 4.4
  • 3rd in AL Pitchers’ bWAR – 5.2

J.A. Happ:

  • 2nd in Wins – 17

Zach Britton:

  • 1st in Saves – 39
  • 0.67 ERA
  • 0.81 WHIP
  • 4th in AL Relievers’ fWAR – 1.9

Rick Porcello:

  • 1st in Wins – 18
  • 3rd in WHIP – 1.04
  • 5th in IP – 179.2

My Rankings:

  1. Corey Kluber
  2. Chris Sale
  3. Justin Verlander

Even with these all these names, there are several others that can have a case for the Cy Young as well such as Masahiro Tanaka (3rd in fWAR), Michael Fulmer (1st in ERA if qualified), and Aaron Sanchez (2nd in ERA). All these names will have to finish strong just to be in the final three candidates for the Cy Young. Who do you think is top candidate right now? Are there any other pitchers worthy of consideration?
